Here, we have the chance to build our timelines together! This is our live session, where we draw our timelines and reflect on their importance in our journeys of resilience.

Live session: storylines

Hello everyone! It’s Beatriz and Zoë here for Week 5, Session 1. And we are live! Thank you so much to those of you who are here with us now, we’re really excited to be live.  

Remember, you’re going to need your timelines with you, so if you don’t have those with you now, please go and get them. Also go get any pens, coloured markers, or other drawing materials you might want. 

And we’re very excited to be doing this specific session live. Building our narratives is a really grounding and meaningful way of rounding off this journey we’ve had over the course, as we build the sense of self and continuity in our lives. So we can’t wait to work on these with you. And to see them in our 1-to-1 chat!

But firstly, as always, let’s start with our grounding exercise! And we’re very pleased that we can actually do this with you live this time, in real time. 

today’s first grounding exercise will be… 

Place your feet on the ground, and in your imagination pick your favorite colour to draw an outline around each foot. Start at the heel and using your imaginary pencil slowly go up the side of your foot to your pinky toe and then make sure you draw around each toe and then go back towards the heel. Repeat on the other foot.

What is something other people might find surprising about you?

Next session will be our final session. Wow. As we approach the end of this course, we want to use this session to really integrate what we’ve learned about our own experiences and also get the chance to connect with each other. That is why, today we’re running a more interactive session. 

As we’ve talked about before, one of the most difficult things to do after experiencing trauma is integrating it as part of our lives. How do we acknowledge the past, and make space for it in what we know about ourselves, without having it take over? 

We are also probably in different stages of processing what has happened to us. So as we walk through our timelines today, we want you to know that you don’t have to talk or think about your experiences in any particular way. That is, you don’t have to talk about your experiences now, or with us over the 1-to-1 chat, or put them on your timelines. Talking about our trauma is a deeply personal decision, and you are the expert in whether or when it is helpful to have this conversation. We think these conversations should happen within a contained and safe environment -- we’ve looked at some ways we can do over the course, like asking for support, connecting with loved ones, and more. 

Whether or not we talk about our trauma, we can work together on identifying other important events in our lives, positive and negative, that have been a big part of our story. This will allow us to place our traumatic experience or experiences as part of a larger narrative. 

So today, we are continuing to create our Storylines. Our own Storylines. They are ours and we have full control over them. We are the ones to decide what goes into them, how much space they take up and how we integrate them as part of our life story. 

So without any further ado, let's get started! Again, we asked you to bring your timelines and some drawing materials today, so please do go and get your materials now if you don’t have them already! If you’re watching this 

 our live session, pause the video if you need to. 

As we go through our own timelines, know that we can make as many drafts as we want. So if it looks a little bit disorganised right now, don’t worry. You can transcribe your Storyline onto another page when you are ready. You can even make multiple drafts, as you remember more events! 

I’ve done most of my timeline already, and many of you have started as well through our activities, but Beatriz is going to draw hers live so we can remind ourselves of all the crucial points of the timeline. If you haven’t been able to start drawing out your timeline in the activities, that’s fine. We can start together now! 

So the first thing Beatriz has done is that she’s drawn a long horizontally in the middle of the page. This line represents our timeline, our life from our moment of birth until now. So if you haven’t done it already, when you draw it, make sure you draw it with momentum! Ready- go. 

Now, Beatriz is going to mark her year of birth at the beginning of the timeline and the present day somewhere in the middle. Like this. 

Now, let’s think about the important events that we asked you to brainstorm right when we started our timelines in Week 3. If you haven’t written down a list yet, why not start thinking about that now as Beatriz starts to place some of her major events down. 

Take your time to think about your important events… maybe you haven’t had the time or energy to think about this until now. That’s ok. Some examples of important moments might be:

When you’re ready, place these events on the 

 of your line in chronological order and write the years when they happened. 

 of our timeline, we are going to write the places where these happened, the town, cities or countries. If you have never moved towns, you may want to specify which house you were living in at the time of each event in the top of your line.

Now, an important note. You can place your traumatic experience as part of your storyline, or not. It’s up to you. Some people prefer including what’s been challenging for them in their storylines and some don’t. For instance, someone may want to include the death of a loved one as it was in an important moment and they want to acknowledge that. Or maybe receiving a particular diagnosis was an important part of your life. It can also serve as a reminder of our resilience - everything we have overcome. Other people don’t want to put these events on their timeline; when it feels like our trauma is taking up too much space in our minds and bodies, it can be a grounding reminder to look at our timelines and see everything we have managed to do and experience outside of the trauma. It’s up to you. 

There are also different ways of representing time on your timelines. You can represent time in a linear way, that is, where there is equal distance between years on your timeline. This can help create a feeling of perspective on how long it has been since certain life events, and it can be grounding to situate the events of our life, positive or negative, along these markers. 

But likewise, others prefer to represent time on their timelines in a non-linear way, for example dedicating more space on the timeline to years after childhood. For some, it’s a way of re-contextualising negative childhood events and placing them in the past, while focussing on a brighter present. Or, it can just be helpful; for most of us, our adult lives have probably been more eventful with major life events like moving, meeting new people, and personal developments than our childhood. The choice, as with all of this, is up to you. 

As you are doing this, we might be remembering some stories about when each of these things happened. If we want to, we can reach out to some family members or friends after this to share our storylines with them. Remember, these storylines are not static! They will change. We can add things to them as we remember them. Or, it might be that someone we know reminds us of an important life event we hadn’t included initially and now we want to. This is your story so you decide how to tell it.

And, maybe you’d like to include some photos! If you have photos, feel free to add them to your timeline - this may work better if you have a larger or longer piece of paper to work with, so keep that in mind: you can see Zoë’s timeline is a little crowded! If you have digital pictures but you can’t print them out, maybe consider doing a timeline on a digital platform like PowerPoint, where you can place digital pictures. Or, if you don’t have any pictures at all of important things in your life, either because they were lost, you had to leave them behind somewhere, or they were never taken, that’s fine too! You don’t have to include them. Or, perhaps, you’d like to look up pictures of things you’d like to include online: a picture of your hometown, maybe, or a picture of something you love doing like a piano if learning the piano was an important part of your life. It’s up to you.

Something else about format: as we said, where and how you draw this timeline is up to you! You can make it online, or on paper, with as many drafts as you need: you do what works for you. If you want it to be something which is easy to store, or you are worried about someone finding it in your house, you can do what I have done, and tape 3 A4 sheets together which you can fold. This way, you can store your timeline as you would a normal sheet of paper, and it keeps it safe. Or maybe your timeline is something you would like to celebrate! You could get a big big piece of paper, and display it somewhere, up to you.  

If you notice your storyline is focusing only on negative events, try to make a conscious effort of thinking about some positive things to include in it. Message us if this is feeling difficult and we can help you think about some ideas. If we are able to place events of different nature on our timelines, this can have a positive impact on our historic memory and the way we look at our lives. 

This is one of the reasons we want to do this with you today. We want to remind you, in a practical way, that your trauma is not the only thing that happened to you, and it does not define you. 

There are so many pieces to who you are and how you tell your story

. We can take a different outlook on life if we are able to see our traumatic experiences as a part of a line of events. We might remember how we overcame other things, how much we have achieved and connect with the person we are today. 

How is it looking? How is it feeling? We hope this activity has made you feel in connection with yourself and your story. We encourage you to share this with someone close to you, whenever you feel ready. It can be a really good opportunity to learn how to tell your story in a different way. 

To finish up today’s session, we want to look at what we did for the Week 3 Session 2 activity, which was to think about our future goals, and place those on our timeline. If you want to share, we’d love to hear one thing from everyone here.
